Name: Jess Evett

Website: Full Circle Doula Care

Region Served: 60 mile radius around Ithaca for labor support; Tompkins County for postpartum care

Type of Doula/Focus of care:  Birth and postpartum doula, sibling doula

General structure of Doula Services:
Labor Support Package: My labor support includes two to three prenatal home visits to help you prepare for labor, learn comfort measures for use during labor, and talk through any concerns you may have about labor, birth, and life with a newborn. I also offer phone and email support before and after your birth, and will be "on call" 24/7 beginning 2 weeks before your estimated due date. I provide continuous support during your labor and birth, and at least one postpartum follow-up visit within a week of the birth of your baby.

Postpartum Care: For families with new babies (both biological and adopted), I offer assistance with infant care, provide mother care, and can care for older siblings. I can also help with light housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, and general organization as you all adjust to the arrival of a new family member.
This support is scheduled at mutually convenient times, generally in blocks of 2-3 hours. Everyone could use a helping hand during the transition to life with a new baby, and families are strengthened when they can ask for and receive help. As your doula, I help make sure you have what you need to be nurtured so that you can nurture your baby.

Sibling Support during Birth: As a sibling doula I help care for older siblings if parents want to give them the option of being present at the birth. Making sure that an older child's needs are met allows the partner to more fully support the laboring mother. In this arrangement, your older child (or children) is with someone experienced in the birth process who can help him or her understand what is happening and, as needed, give breaks to the laboring mother's main support person. Just as with labor support, sibling doula support includes two to three prenatal visits to get to know the child/children ahead of time, and a similar on call arrangement.

Additional projects/non-doula services: In addition to working as a doula, I offer childbirth preparation classes inspired by Birthing from Within and mindfulness practice. These classes are designed to prepare women and their partners for birth and parenthood, covering topics such as the birth process, pain coping strategies, positions for labor, informed and empowered decision making, feeding your baby, postpartum care for mom and baby, and preparing for changes in your relationship. My classes are designed to address the needs of the mind, body, and heart in preparing for the journey leading up to birth, the birth itself, and what comes next! I teach a six-week series at Jillian's Drawers and offer private classes upon request.

Why are you a Doula? I came to this work after discovering the incredible benefit of having a doula myself during the birth of my daughter and in the initial weeks following her arrival. Feeling empowered and supported greatly eased my own journey into parenthood. Having also had the great fortune of being present at two births prior to my own, I knew that I felt in my element in the presence of this powerful, transformative life event even before I knew about doula work as a profession. Around the world, women have been supporting one another during and after childbirth for much of human history. I believe there is a reason for this, and that now, maybe more than ever, support for women and their partners through labor and during the postpartum period is of enormous benefit.

Testimonial:
"I highly recommend Jess’s doula services to anyone who is expecting. During my pregnancy Jess helped educate my husband and me so we could make informed decisions we were confident in. I had a better vision of the labor process in general and a clear understanding of my own birth plan. During the labor and birthing process Jess was absolutely incredible. She had a variety of amazing relaxation strategies that helped me have a natural childbirth and just overall kept my spirit up the entire time. She is incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and compassionate!
Postpartum, Jess continued her support for my family and me. I learned helpful breastfeeding tips and overall advice on the various questions and concerns my husband and I had. Her support and genuine nature definitely eased my emotional ups and downs during this huge transition!" Sara and Ben A.

Training and Certification: Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula (Doula Trainings International).  I also hold an MFA in photography, and have up to date Infant and Child CPR Certification.

Fee Structure: $700 for labor support or sibling doula support, $25/hour for postpartum care. Since I believe that all women should have access to a doula if they would like one, I offer my services on a sliding scale if necessary and am open to bartering.
