Name: Melissa Blake
Business: Postpartum Doula
Contact Information: firstname.lastname@example.org
Region Served: within a 40 mile drive of Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport
Type of Doula and focus of care: Postpartum doula with special focus on basic breastfeeding support
General structure of Doula services: I offer postpartum care, including: newborn care, childcare for older siblings, housework, breastfeeding support and referrals to other care providers.
Why are you a Doula? Before my son was born, I was as fiercely independent as the next gal. But after his birth I became extremely grateful for my network of support. The word "village" took on whole new meaning to me. I believe all families deserve a "babymoon", a time of peace and quiet to get to know each other, get breastfeeding going, and get into a rhythm together. Too often other responsibilities and stresses make that hard, and I feel passionately about trying to lighten the parents' load so they can focus on their baby. For first-time parents, it can also be nice to get coaching and reassurance from someone with more experience, someone who comes to their home and is just there for them, with no other needs or agenda.
Training/Certification: Attendance at breastfeeding conferences; completion of "Breastfeeding for Birth Professionals" course; certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer (includes infant, child, and adult CPR) and as a Wilderness First Responder (a 64-hour first aid training course); childcare provider and preschool teacher for the past 2 years; I'm the mother of a preschooler myself.
Fee Structure: What I prefer to do is visit four times in the first ten days, for 2.5 hours each time. This gives me a good chunk of time to help around the house, take care of the baby or older siblings so parents can take care of themselves, and be there to answer questions as they arise. Part of the 2.5 hours could be errands like stopping by the grocery store. That adds up to 10 hours over 10 days, for which I charge on a self-determined sliding scale of $180-$220, due when you contract my services. (visits are generally to your home, but could be in the hospital under special circumstances)
Alternatively, and after the first ten days, you may pay $20-$25/hr for any number of hours. Giving me a deposit to cover your first ten hours will make me more available to you because I won't take on any other clients around the time you anticipate needing me. But you can also contact me at the last minute and see what availability I have.
I do not charge for travel within 20 miles from Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport. Please add .50/mile for travel beyond that.
I offer a free informational interview where you can get to know me a bit and I can find out more about your needs and plans. After that we can decide if it looks like a good fit.
